this is a limitation to the way sub domains work.

a sub domain maps a domain name to a sub folder of your site.

That subfolder of the site becomes the root folder for that sub domain

your subdomain does not have visibility to folders that are bellow the subfolder that it represents.

Your subdomain:
subdomain.domainname.com

is not able to access any of the files at the main domain:
www.domainname.com
