Triggering an email based on value in date field

Not sure if this is possible.

A site I look after lists holiday itineraries that tour operators add to the site.

The site owners can set whether or not itineraries appear on the site using date fields - so they can enter a date up until which the itinerary is paid up, and so can appear on the site. And when that date is in the past, the itinerary will drop off the site.

I am used to emails being triggered by events, e.g. form submission, but in this scenario would it be possible for an email to be triggered based on the date, i.e. if the date < today then send email to remind people to resubscribe?
